Autumn Day

Lord: it is time. Summer was very large.
Lay your shadow on the sundials
and let the winds free on the open fields.

Command the last fruits to be full;
give them two more southernly days,
urge them towards completion and chase
the last sweetness into the heavy wine.

Who now has no house does not build one anymore.
Who is alone now will be so for a long time,
will stay awake, read, write long letters
and will wander restlessly through the avenues,
back and forth, when the leaves are drifting.

  Rainer Maria Rilke
